What are the qualifications to become a Foster Grandparent?
It is simple. To qualify, you must be
at least 60 years old, live on a limited income and be able to serve
a minimum of 20 hours per week.
How do Foster
Grandparents benefit?
Foster Grandparents receive a
non-taxable stipend. This stipend does not affect social security or
pension benefits, subsidized housing rates, Medicare, food stamps or
any other benefits you may be receiving.
What
do Foster Grandparents do with the children?
Foster Grandparents tutor, mentor and
comfort children. They help children develop basic learning skills,
share life experiences, spend one-on-one attention in areas of
reading, writing and math to prepare the children for independent
living and provide children with emotional support and empathy.
Do Foster
Grandparents take children into their home?
No. You will help children at a
Volunteer Station such as a Head Start classroom, child care center,
school, etc.
Where do Foster Grandparents work?
Currently, we have 20 volunteer sites
throughout York City and County. We match a Volunteer to a site that
is close to their home. Most of our Foster Grandparents travel less
than 2 miles to work.
How old are the children that
Foster Grandparents will be working with?
The Foster Grandparents Program can
help children from the ages of 0 to 21 years old. We allow you to
choose the group you feel you would most enjoy.
When would a Foster Grandparent
volunteer?
Schedules depend on the Volunteer
Station and the Volunteer. Our program is flexible and tries to
accommodate the schedules that are best for all involved. Most
Foster Grandparents start in the morning. They can work 4 or 5 days
per week. We ask for a minimum of 20 hours per week. Volunteers can
work up to 40 hours per week.
